Convict Notes

Ellen left the Colony for California on the Una under the First Class listed passenger "Henry Snell" who was her divorced and deceased husband. By 1855 the couple having found gold in California, returned to the Hunter Valley and married in the East Maitland Catholic Church NSW BDM 626/1855.Daniel and Ellen lived on the Taylors communal 5 acre bush block called "Killarney" at Fordwich. On 18 June,1857 Ellen is recorded as buried at Haydonton Catholic Cemetery under the name JANE MULLENS,parents "Daniel-Maria = DANIEL (fRANcIS) DoyLE. Ellen Duffy-Snells' NSWBDM is 4227/1858 for "Catherine Doyle (parents) John, Anastasia" lists 1858, so the 1857 on the headstone is to show a V letter for use in the words ARRIVED and SEVEN Taylor children on deciphered messages. That headstone message deciphers clearly as "ELLEN/ELEANOR DuffY ARRIVED oN tHE EDwARD AND MARRIED fRANCIS/DANIEL DOyLE,WhO HAD ARRIVED ON THE SuSAN".

On 9 May 1839 the name Ellen Snell precedes my 5th generation nana Ellen Doyle of Henry Wellesley 1836, on a return list to the PFF from Moreton Bay. Seems Ellen Doyles' unmarried brother Daniel is discussed. **NOTE:DEATH OF HENRY SNELL NSW BDM 482/1842...How convenient and its later so startling...Eleanor Doughy given Ticket Of Leave 42/3283 in 1842 at Yass, NSW. Then freed convict Daniel Doyle marries Ellen Snell under Colonial Permit in May 1843 at Yass. On 7 April 1850 Daniel Doyles TOL states "Lit out on Una to California". Both Daniel Doyle and "ellen SNELL" are listed as passengers to San Francisco. Ellen Snell-Doyle has only a TOL in 1842...She has absconded.
