Convict Notes

FOOTNOTE: William Bain, who was convicted along with Edward Douglas, was also transported to VDL, arriving there in July 1852 aboard the Pestonjee Bomanjee. See his bio at https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/bain/william/33451.

HOSPITAL: 15 November, 1861: A notation of this date appears on his Conduct Record: "Claim made by Col Govt for repayment of 17.17.6 for treatment of this man in hospital in 1855." (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-107$init=CON33-1-107p82) Given that up to five years passed before the notation was made, it's possible the year was entered incorrectly and the story below, from the Hobart Courier, could be about "our" Edward Douglas and what caused his stint in hospital: 22 July, 1856, p3: "ACCIDENT. -- A labouring man named Edward Douglas, whilst shooting on Sunday afternoon, met with an accident occasioned by the bursting of the gun. The thumb and fingers of the left hand were much torn, but none of the bones were broken. Douglas is now an inmate of H. M. General Hospital." 28 November, 1854: Granted a Ticket of Leave (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-107$init=CON33-1-107p82). 13 November, 1855: Received his Conditional Pardon (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-107$init=CON33-1-107p82). --0--

IN VDL: 4 July, 1852: On arrival, he was listed as convict # 25572, aged 18, Roman Catholic, single and an imperfect shoemaker. He was 5'5¼" tall with a fresh complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair; and his native place was Glasgow. He had a previous conviction for theft and had served 60 days for that crime (https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON33-1-107$init=CON33-1-107p82). --0--

NEWSPAPER report of the trial: 24 April, 1849: From the Glasgow Chronicle, p5: "Edward Douglas and William Bain, two young boys, were then charged with theft by housebreaking and by opening lockfast places. They both pleaded not guilty. It appeared that they had broken into the premises of Lethem, Blyth, & Lethem, [muslin] manufacturers, Virginia Street, Glasgow, and stolen 140 tinsel bobbins, two plaids, and a coat; and also, from a lockfast place in the warehouse, three £5 notes, seven £1 notes, 12 shillings, and a bank bill, or bill of exchange, for £537; and also, from another lockfast safe, £3 in silver and copper, and also £2 3s. in silver and copper from a lockfast drawer. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, and the prisoners were each sentenced to seven years' transportation." (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/) --0--
