On Thursday arrived from Calcutta, via Derwent, the ship Mary, Captain Ormon, with a various cargo. -Passengers from Calcutta, Captain Faithfull and Lieutenant Hamilton:-The Mary sailed from Calcutta the 23d of February, and left the Pilot the 1st of March. Sydney Gazette, Sat 7 Jun 1817. -------------------------------------------------- Convicts who sailed on the 'Mary' direct from Ireland - 1819 & 1836 - are currently being listed, incomplete data to date.

National Archive. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/6/69 1823 May Prisoner name: Janet Douglas. Prisoner details: Of Cupar, Angus. Court and date of trial: Circuit Court of Justiciary, Perth, September 1822. Crime: Uttering forged notes - to the value of 20 shillings. Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Annotated: Nil; 'Embarked in the Mary'. Petitioner(s): David Maitland, defence counsel. Grounds for clemency: The convict served a long imprisonment prior to trial and nine months solitary confinement after conviction causing her health to be materially injured by the intense cold. Other papers: Letter from David Maitland transmitting his petition. Additional Information: Held in the jail at Cupar.

HO 17/6/29 1822 Sept; 1822 Nov Prisoner name: David Liddle Kennedy and Janet Douglas. Prisoner details: Kennedy a tailor of Dunfermline and Douglas of Inverness. Court and date of trial: Circuit Court of Justiciary, Edinburgh 13 September 1822. Crime: Uttering forged notes of the Bank of Sir William Forbes and Company, Edinburgh. Initial sentence: Both sentenced to seven years transportation. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): William Kennedy (husband of Douglas, brother of Kennedy), medical student. Grounds for clemency: They did not purchase or make the notes but merely circulated them. Additional Information: No mitigation is sought, only that the petitioner may accompany the convicts into exile. ---------------------------------------------------------- Perth Circuit Court. David Liddle Kennedy and Janet Douglas were placed at the bar, accused of vending forged notes; they having, on the 10th of July last, passed a note, purporting to be a £1 note of Sir W. Forbes and Co. bankers in Edinburgh, at the Leathem Fifeshire; and also with vending a note of a similar description in Auchtermuchty. The prisoners pleaded guilty. David Liddle Kennedy and Janet Douglas were placed at the bar, accused of vending forged notes; they having, on the 10th of July last, passed a note, purporting to be a £1 note of Sir W. Forbes and Co. bankers in Edinburgh, at the Leathem Fifeshire; and also with vending a note of a similar description in Auchtermuchty. The prisoners pleaded guilty. Mr. HOPE restricted the libel to an arbitrary punishment. Lord HERMAN) shortly addressed the Jury, who found the prisoners Guilty in terms of their own confession. The prisoners were sentenced to seven years transportation. Star, 23 Sept 1822.
