21 Sep 1865 - Joseph's Death Certificate records that he was born in Downpatrick, County Down Ireland; that he married Mary Orr Burgess in Downpatrick when he was 21; he had been in the colony of NSW for 50yrs; and he was buried 23 September 1865. Children of Marriage: Orr 56, Eliza 53, Margaret 42, Joseph 39, John 37, Sarah 34, 2 boys, 2 girls deceased

In the 1828 Census, Joseph was farming 50 acres at North Richmond, 15 acres cleared, 14 acres cultivated, 12 cattle.


Josephs wife and children arrived free in NSW on ‘Woodman’ on 25/6/1823 with five children, almost eight years after her husband. Three more children were born in NSW Convicts who could support themselves, wives and children could apply to have their wives and children join them in the colony. Joseph received his Certificate of Freedom on 29/9/1825 The Douglas home, built of hand hewn hardwood with a sandstone floor offered meals, stabling & fodder for horses, catering to travelers on the Bell's Line of Road. Mary also made a particularly fine peach wine according to reports of the period. In 1828 Joseph was farming 50 acres at Kurrajong Heights. Joseph and Mary are buried at St David's cemetery, Kurrajong.




Married Mary Orr Burgess. She died at Kurrajong NSW in 1857. She arrived free in NSW on "Woodman" in 1823 with five children. Three more were born in NSW. Joseph Douglas had been assigned to Sir John Jamison at Regentville until the expiration of his sentence. The Douglas home constructed circa 1825 still stands at Kurrajong Heights NSW.
