Convict Notes

1833: On arrival in VDL, John Dow (prisoner #905) said he had been transported for desertion, and had a previous conviction for same. He was listed as married with 2 children but in another line of his record it says he was single. The report from his time aboard the prison hulk says he was "Illicitly trafficking with 4 men in the Royal Arsenal" (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-10$init=CON31-1-10p135). 1837: He was granted a Ticket of Leave (see Hobart Town Courier, 8 December, p2). 1839, 18 June: Granted another ToL (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-10$init=CON31-1-10p135). 1839: Granted his Free Certificate No.767. 1838, 12 December: John Dow and Jean McLeod (prisoner #90 per Lady of the Lake) sought permission to marry (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON52-1-1p021j2k). There is no record of the outcome, and no indication on the application that Jean McLeod (alias McLean, alias Watson) was previously/still married. See her profile at https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/mclean/jean/16409.

1832, 5 November: John Dow was convicted for desertion. 1833, 10 January: He was received aboard the prison hulk Justitia at Woolwich, listed as 37 years old. He was sent from there for transportation on 11 June (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849).
