He was tried for horse theft, on 15 5 1800, at Old Bailey on 28 5 1800, sentenced to death commuted to Life, held probably at London or Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 11 3 1803 after a voyage of 6.5months on HMS GLATTON. She was assigned as servant to Isaac (Dowse/Douce). She was recorded in 1825 to be victualled with her family from Liverpool. She was recorded in 1828 with her family at Airds. She died on 4 11 1852 age37. ..John Giles (Chippendall/ale) was born in 1809 at Liverpool Lancashire & baptised in 1809. He arrived in Australia free in 1815 on HEBE & in Bathurst in 1845 from Sydney. He became Governor Bathurst Gaol 1845-67 & lived at Governors residence at Gaol & then Stewart St. He married secondly Alice Susan (Read her second marriage) on 28 4 1859 at Bathurst. He was an active member of Church of England & on 2 4 1852 he was elected among others to a committee to revive & promote a subscription list for establishment of a CofE schoolhouse. 1828 NSW Census Index Isaac Dowse, age 47, CP, per Glatton, Life, Protestant, Brickmaker. Airds. Has 110 acres of land, 20 of which are cleared and cultivated. Has 9 horses. Elizabeth Dowse, age 41, Broxbornbury, 1813, 7 years, protestant. And children: Margaret, aged 13, Isaac Jr, aged 10. Elizth, jun, aged 6, Thomas, aged 4, all born in colony.




That Petitioner arrived on the ship Glatton, now about seventeen years, has a Conditional Pardon, a wife and five children, possessed fifty acres of land by purchase, and being desirous to cultivate more land. …. Petitioner having been a log time in this employ of the Government as a brickmaker is known to Your Excellency. (Signed) Robert Cartwright June 21 1820

Memorial (Fiche 3129; 4/1841B No.223) 1825 Nov 5 - To be victualled from the Store at Liverpool for six months; with his wife, six children and convict servant (Reel 6015; 4/3515 p.529)




Tried and convicted at the Old Bailey on 28th May 1800 for stealing a horse, he was sentenced to death, this was later commuted to transportation for life. Left England on 23rd Setember 1802. Ship:- the 'Glatton' sailed with 271 male and 130 female convicts on board of which 9 males and 5 females died during the voyage. Arrived on 11th March 1803. Married convict Esther Jenner ('Sydney Cove' 1807) on 24th December 1807. Thomas and Esther had 4 daughters between 1808-1814. After Esther died in 1814, convict Elizabeth Symons ('Broxbornebury' 1814) was assigned to him and became his common law wife, Elizabeth and Isaac had 2 sons and 2 daughters between 1815-1825. Old Bailey Trial Transcription. Reference Number: t18000528-93 432. ISAAC DOUSE was indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 15th of May , a grey gelding, value 20s. the property of William Cole . WILLIAM COLE sworn. - I lost a horse from the side of Lambton-Green, on the side of Hounslow-Heath, in the parish of Heston ; I missed it on the 15th of May, I turned the horse off my own premises at one o'clock in the morning; I am a drover , I came home at twelve o'clock and sed my horse and myself, and then turned the house out upon the Common; I missed it before six o'clock. Cross-examined by Mr. Alley. Q. This horse of your's is very apt to stray? - A. No, it is not. Q. I am told it is a white horse? - A. No, it is a grey; a grey house on the Common, and a white horse upon the sign. Court. There is no such thing as a white horse. THOMAS PEAKE sworn. - I keep the Black-Lion public-house, and stables, at Bayswater: On the 15th of May, the prisoner at the bar brought a grey horse to me, between seven and eight o'clock in the morning, he asked me if I would buy a horse of him; I asked him how he came by the horse; he told me he bought it, on the day before, at Chertsey-fair, of a chimney-sweeper; I then told him, neitner the horse should go out of my stable, nor he from my hands; I thought he did not come honestly by him, as I knew the horse; I had seen him a great many times before, I had seen the old gentleman ride him, he has used my house, with cattle, for some years; the prisoner begged to be released, and said he did not come honestly by it; he was a very remarkable horse, he has two spavins on both his hind legs; I took the prisoner to London, put him into a coach, and took him to Bow-street; the Magistrate desired me to keep the horse till I had further orders. Q. Did you shew Mr. Cole the horse? - A. Yes; I am sure it is Mr. Cole's horse; I shewed it him the next day. Cross-examined by Mr. Alley. Q. You are a horse-slaughterer? - A. No; I keep a public-house, and am a livery-stable keeper. Q. Did you tell the Magistrate that this man confessed he did not come honestly by it? - A. I swore it there; I told Sir William Addington so; what he said was, that this horse was not his. Q. Will you undertake to swear, that the man ever confessed he came dishonestly by the horse? - A. He said the horse was not his. Q. Did he say he stole it? - A. He said he did not come honestly by it. Cole. The horse that I saw at Mr. Peake's was my horse, and had been for a year and a half. Prisoner's defence. I was on the road, and saw a man who looked like a chimney-sweeper, with a horse; I asked him what he was going to do with it; he said; it was going to be slaughtered, and I bought the horse of him; I gave him a guinea and a pint of beer. GUILTY Death . (Aged 23.) Tried by the first Middlesex Jury, before Mr. COMMON SERJEANT.




Married Esther Jane Jenner on 24/12/1807 and had four children. Esther died in 1814 and Isaac had four more children with Elizabeth Symons but marriage to Elizabeth not found.
