CORK ASSIZES. CITY CRIMINAL COURT,: MONDAY. {Concluded from our last) Denis Driscoll, Samuel Ward, and John Scannell, three young boys were indicted for stealing several bankers’ notes, half sovereign, some silver, and two purses, the property of Loveday Biddy. This lady being a Quakeress, she affirmed that she lost the money ; she had it in her shop near the window; she could not say who took it, but she heard that a neighbour saw some boys at her window; she saw one of the prisoners (Scannell), whom she identified, looking in at her windows some days before. John Sheehan, {another young barefooted boy, with gold ring on his finger,) an approver, deposed, that he in company with the prisoners, was going down Patrick-street and they saw the money through the window, on which Scannell jumped over the counter and took it, and shared with him —he got 1s. 6d. This prisoner underwent a long examination the Court, in the course of which he admitted having been present at several robberies. Margaret Daly deposed that two of the prisoners (Sheehan and Ward,) came to lodge with her, and gave her £2 10s. to keep until morning, she did not know they were robbers, or the would not give them lodging—they were attending on glass-blowers ; she gave the money to the Constables, she had it not ten minutes in her possession when the Peace-officers came in. His Lordship charged the Jury at some length, who returned Verdict of Guilty —they were not sentenced. Cork Constitution, 27 Aug 1829.
