Convict Notes

Paul was from Queens Co in Ireland. He was transported for 7 years for assaulting Laurence Murphy, a publican with a stick.

Paul was an illiterate Roman Catholic. He was described as both violent and stupid, and in 1866 [sic] he raped a 10-year-old girl in Ballarat Victoria. He only received 2 years hard labour for the crime. After he was released, he was killed by a blow to the head with a bottle. His murderer was found not guilty. Ref: Vandemonians by Janet McCalman. P. 16. Paul Duff was convicted of raping Mary Ann Prees in 1864 not 1866. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article72513708
