Regarding James's original sentence at Waterford for Manslaughter, ... There is a report of a trial at the Lent assizes of a William Duggin for Manslaughter... Committed to the County Waterford Gaol, on Monday, by Power, Esq., William Duggan, charged with the murder of Jeremiah Molloy. Southern Reporter, 3 March 1825. City Court. William Duggan was then put upon his trial for the wilful murder of Jeremiah Mulvey, at fair of Windigap. This occurrence took place three years ago, but no prosecution had heretofore been brought forward, in consequence of the prisoner having left the country. The prisoner gave himself up to Mr. Power, Magistrate of the county. about a fortnight since. In the course of the trial, which occupied but a very short time, it appeared that the deceased had been killed in fight, but the circumstances of the case were aggravated by the fact that the unfortunate man had met his death merely attempting to rescue his ? from the party which the prisoner belonged. His Lordship, in charging the Jury, strongly animadverted on the on the fatal consequences which always attend these species of fights. The Jury after a short deliberation, acquitted of the. murder, but found him guilty of Manslaughter. (To transported for seven years.) Waterford Mail, 16 Mar 1825. ASSIZES David Sheehan, burglary, judgment of death, no day fixed for execution. Wm. Duggan, manslaughter—James Brien, James Morrison, Wm Dillon, and Jeremiah Brien, stealing— James Walsh, sheep stealing, Lymdi.(?) and Michael Ducey, larceny, to be transported for seven years.
