In October 1802, at St Mary's Manchester, Margaret Jones married Patrick Duggan. He was a private in the 17th light dragoons and she was only 18. Only 3 months later, she was arrested for stealing 2 printed cotton gowns and other items of clothing and committed to the Castle awaiting trial. She was tried at the Lancaster Assizes, Friday 1st April 1803. She was found guilty and sentenced t Death. Judge Sir Giles Rooke recommended his Majesty's mercy and the sentence was reprieved to one of Transportation for Life. In the colony, Margaret must have had a short term relationship with William Reddin (Convict, Perseus, 1802) She gave birth to a son William on 6th August 1806. The relationship did not last and she married John Tarlington (Convict, Matilda, 1791). They married on 30th December 1811 at St John, Parramatta. The child went by the name; William Duggan Tarlington, all his life. John and Margaret had a son, John who was born and died in 1818.
