The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

ADM 101/57/8/11817-1817 Folios 10 and 14: John Dunbabbin, Convict, aged 28; disease or hurt, violent griping tortuous pains in his bowels, with incipient desire to stool, dysentery. Taken ill, 10 October 1817. Dismissed 20 November 1817.




Born at Norton, Runcorn, Cheshire. After serving his sentence, John appears to have made his way back to England by 1861, dying in Runcorn the following year. - dunbabin@one-name.org
