Catherine Dunn was transported on the Margaret, departing 30th Apr 1840 and arriving 18th Aug 1840 with 78 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Convict Notes




Catherine's daughter Jane Gasmar Dunn was born 1843 in Sydney. Father unknown. Died 03 March 1905 in Melbourne. Catherine's daughter Margaret Amelia Dunn born 1845 in Sydney area, died 13 September 1924 at Wangaratta Victoria. Father unknown.




On November 30, 1847, Catherine was granted permission to marry Rupert Byatt, aged 28. Rupert was a convict, sentenced for life as a “highwayman,” arriving on the Eden, but granted Ticket of Leave – they married on December 6, 1847 in the Parish of St Lawrence, Sydney, Rupert was described as a bachelor, Catherine a widow. Catherine and Rupert had three children, Sarah (1850-1879), Mary Ann Catherine (1951-1896) and William John (1854-1944). Catherine died in the “Upper Murray District” of Victoria in 1857.




Reference to a child accompanying convicts is: Maria Dunne. There being no other Dunne/Dunn passengers on the ship, it is presumed Maria is Catherine's child.

Catherine Dunn was convicted at Dublin City in 1840 for pick pocketing (former conviction). 7 yr Transportation sentence. Aged 28yrs; widow with one child; Roman Catholic; kitchen maid. Transported to New South Wales, Australia on the "Margaret" in 1840.
