However, later in the year of 1806 a worse tragedy struck the family. Their convict servant, Richard Morgan, woke early one morning and felled a tree. The family were just rising when the huge tree crashed down through the roof of their home. Mother Catherine was severally injured but two of her young children, Catherine (10) and James (6) were struck and killed. It was decided that the convict servant was at fault and he was sentenced to 500 lashes for his 'crime'.

James was rated as industrious and the 60 acres he was granted at Portland Reach was right beside his old shipmate, Thomas Chaseling (Convict; Royal Admiral, 1792). Almost immediately after taking up his grant, James became embroiled in the problems with the aboriginals in the area. There were lots of raids and burning and also several spearing and shootings. Questions were raised when James shot and wounded one of the aboriginal people. However, his convict servant Richard Morgan and his neighbour defended his right to protect his family and property. Amazingly the Dunn family was not raided in 1805 when several houses were burned and settlers speared. Then in 1806, in March there were the terrible floods which raged over the whole area. Losses were huge and many lives were lost.

James (or Patrick) was an ex-patriot Irishman. He was convicted of breaking into a house in Surrey. Soon after his arrival in the colony, he commenced a relationship with Catherine Barry (Convict; Sugar Cane 1793). It would appear that the couple never married but they did stay together ove rthe years and raise a family.
