** SHIP - SCARBOROUGH ** Old Bailey On-Line 1787 - *** Tried; 11th July 1787 Tried at Old Bailey, London. Accused of grand larceny (stealing on the 12th of June last, two cotton counterpanes, value 10 s. one pair of sheets, value 1 s. one linen table cloth, value 1 s. the property of Susannah Wharton , widow; and one cloth coat, value 12 s.). Found not guilty. 1787 - *** 1. Tried; 12 December 1787. Tried at Old Bailey, London. Accused of burglary (burglariously and feloniously breaking and entering the dwelling-house of John Fairlamb , about the hour of ten in the night, on the 6th day of November last, and burglariously stealing therein one pair of silver candlesticks, value 5 l. twelve table knives and forks, value 12 s. twelve desert knives and forks, value 12 s. two waistcoats, value 10 s. two pair of nankeen breeches, value 20 s. a silver scissors-sheath, value 2 s. one pair of cotton drawers, value 1 s. two cotton gowns, value 20 s. a silver thimble, value 1 s. his property; a black cloak, value 10 s.). Found guilty. Sentenced to death. 1787 - *** 2. Tried; 12 December 1787.Tried at Old Bailey, London. Accused of housebreaking (he, on the 15th day of November last, did break, and enter the dwelling house of Henry Pincutt , esq; and burglariously stealing therein, a scarlet coat, value 30 s. three silk waistcoats, value 20 s. two cotton counterpaines, value 30 s. a pillow-case, value 6 d. a dimity bed gown, value 6 d. a dimity gown and coat, value 20 s. one cotton gown and coat, value 30 s. a pair of stays, value 5 s.). I was convicted in December sessions, 1787, on the evidence of Francis Fleming ; I was entirely innocent; the late recorder, then in his charge to the jury, told them, he thought it was not law, to convict a man without any corroborating circumstance; there was none in my case; as such, I think I should not accept it. Court. If you wish to make any application, you must make it elsewhere; but it is totally incompetent to alledge that here. Prisoner. I think I ought to suffer as a man; I am very sorry I must refuse it. Court.
