Convict Notes

James Dutton's partner was Biddy SAMUELS, who had been married to William Samuels in Sydney. The name SANDWELL was a furphy suggested to me years ago due to misreading of the poor handwriting. Biddy was Bridget MEEHAN b1810 in Ireland, the daughter of Sarah DEERING (nee Meehan) b1785. Biddy had 3 children with Samuels, 2 with James Dutton, then 3 with George Gallimore. Where & when James Dutton died and was buried is not known.

Edit: James Dutton did have a relationship with a convict named Bridget Meehan, which resulted in at least one child (Henry Dutton who married Celestine Jane McGrath in 1846 and listed his mother on the marriage certificate as being Bridget 'Meecham'), but this woman Bridget, later Bridget Samuels, had nothing to do with the Sandwell family. It is true that the Sandwells owned a pub, and after Edward Sandwell's death in 1838, his wife, Elizabeth Sandwell took it over. She did have a daughter called Elizabeth, but her daughter is recorded as marrying Alexander Carmichael in 1843. The proof that this is not a different Elizabeth Sandwell is a newspaper clipping from 1864, where an Elizabeth Carmichael writes about the recent death of her mother (Elizabeth Sandwell), who owned an inn. The woman that James Dutton actually had a relationship with was known as Bridget Samuels because she had married a man called William Samuels in 1830. Samuels himself died in 1835, freeing her to pursue Dutton, even if they never officially married, and she later married George Gallimore in 1846 (making her my great great great great grandmother). Hope this clears things up! Elizabeth Sandwell probably never even met James.

James Dutton's common-law wife "Biddy Sanawells" had actually been born Elizabeth Sandwell in London, England in 1820. Following James Dutton's death in 1842, she became "Bridget Samuels" and eventually married ex-convict George Gallimore (1800-85) in Nuria? New South Wales in 1846. Elizabeth Sandwell (1820-98) was a daughter of Edward Sandwell (1770-1838), who, following bankruptcy in London, had emigrated as a free settler with his wife and 3 children from England to Sydney, Australia on the 373-ton bark Adrian in 1826. From 1830 until 1838, Edward was the licensee of the Rose & Crown Inn on Castlereagh Street in Sydney. Following her father's death (suicide) in 1838, Elizabeth ran off with ex-convict James Dutton (1797-1842) to Wellington Valley, N.S.W. and changed her name to Biddy Sanawells, possibly out of shame and also to avoid being discovered by searchers sent out to find her by her mother back in Sydney. Elizabeth (aka Biddy or Bridget) wasn't forgiven for her actions by her family until 1843, when she returned to Sydney for the christening of George Gallimore junior, the son she had out of wedlock with George Gallimore immediately following James Dutton's death. James Dutton was transported along with John Taylor (also on board Neptune) for breaking and entering the house of Morris David, and stealing wearing apparel on fair day. Both James and John Taylor, who were listed as "Labourers" were also indicted or pocketpicking a watch, money and unspecified number of promissory notes. There was no prosecution as they were convicted of the above charge. 28/7/1820: Forwarded to Parramatta for distribution. 1829: TOL Bathurst 9/11/1833: COF 1838: Married Bridget Meighan/Meehan (1810-1898) arrived per Elizabeth 1828. 1841 Census: At Wellington, County Bligh, District Wellington. 1842: James died at Wellington.

James had 2 sons (James (b1838) and Thomas Henry (b1841) born at Burrendong (near Wellington NSW) to Biddy Samuels (Meehan) where he is recorded in the 1841 census. There is no record of his death or burial?
