CHILD OF MARRIAGE: John DAVIS b. 17 May 1852 at Hobart. Father - Phillip DAVIS, labourer, New Town. Mother - Alice DWYER (incorrectly indexed at DYSON). ref. 33/1/4 no. 1394. John was admitted to the Queens Orphanage when aged 10 yrs, on 28 Jan 1861 - reason given as his mother had died. Had several placements and finally discharged 1868. DEATH OF ALICE: 27 Nov 1860 - Alice DAVIS, aged 33 yrs, servant, born Tipperary, died at H.M. General Hospital, Hobart , cause - cancer of the womb. (ref. 35/1/6 no. 2493)

Alice DWYER was convicted at Tipperary, Ireland on 15 March 1849 for arson (the circumstances of the time in Ireland should be taken into context of this 'crime'). 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Earl Grey' ship, arriving 9 May 1850. Single woman, 1 child onboard ship with her; noted as very quiet; aged 29 yrs; 5'2" height; Roman Catholic; pale complexion; brown hair; blue eyes. Native place of birth: Tipperary, Ireland. (ref. convict record) Father: Michael (ref. Convict Indent record) Sister: Mary " " " " Child: Cath, 3 yrs old " " " (stated the father of her child was Alexander (Al) Jordan. Catharine Jordan was admitted to Queens Orphanage, New Town, Hobart, VDL on 16 May 1850 (a requirement by the Govt.). Mother - Alice DWYER, 'Earl Grey' ship; father - Alexander JORDAN. Discharged to mother, now on Ticket of leave status, on 12 Nov 1851. Colony of VDL: Work services 28 Oct 1851: Application for permission to marry - Alice DWYER ('Earl Grey') to Phillip DAVIS ('Mount Stewart Elphinstone'). Approved. 17 Nov 1851: Alice DWYER, aged 29 yrs, servant, spinster married Philip DAVIS incorrectly indexed as Philip DAVIN), aged 28 yrs, labourer, bachelor - at the Church of St. Joseph, Hobart. (ref noted on Conduct Record & Tas Archives Marriage Register 37/1/10 no. 574) 7 Sept 1852: Ticket of Leave granted. 8 May 1854: Threatening to take the life of Maria Withers. Husband Philip Davis to make her sureties and keep the peace. 14 Aug 1855: Conditional Pardon approved.
