Sydney Monitor, 9 Feb 1833. A mistake crept into the report of The trials before the Supreme Court last week, in the case of James Dwyer, for the murder of Henry Dawkins, which is mentioned as having occurred at Bathurst, instead of Patrick's Plains, Hunter's River. Murder. — We have just heard of the death of a person named Dawkins (holding a ticket-of-leave), in the employ of Mr. White, in that part of the country termed Darlington. Strong suspicions are harboured against a shepherd of Mr. White's, who, with Dawkins, was at some distance in the bush at a sheep station. The shepherd arrived at Darlington on Monday, the 5th instant, and informed the inhabitants that the deceased had been murdered by the bushrangers two days previous. It also appears that Dawkins had got this shepherd punished a few weeks prior to the murder ; and from that period he had been heard to declare his determination to have satisfaction. Since his first report of the decease, he has, we under stand, let some of those whom he considered as his confidential friends into the secret. Dawkins formerly held a situation in the Surveying Department, and was distinguished by very superior conduct. His body presented a most horrid spectacle. We are credibly informed that there is a great want of a strict administration of justice in this district, and that bushranging and crimes of every description are carried on to a most fearful extent. The Currency Lad, (Sydney), 10 Nov 1832.
