Thomas Headington/Heddington/Eddington came from Bray in Berkshire. He was sentenced to 7 years' transportation at Abingdon on 4 July 1785 for having 'broke open a bureau at Bray, and stealing thereout about £6 or £7 in cash in a bag, and also a wooden dish with a great many halfpence and farthings, amongst which was a remarkable crooked farthing, and two large silver spoons'. He was sent to the Ceres hulk in 1786 at the age of 18, and delivered to the Alexander at Woolwich on 6 Jan. 1787, sailing with the First Fleet under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip to Botany Bay. When his name was listed upon landing there, it was written down as Eddington, and he was always known by this name afterwards, although surprisingly his headstone on Norfolk Island spells the name as Headington. All his descendants have been called Eddington. Thomas Headington was on the Alexander, a transport of 452 tons which carried 195 male convicts, with Duncan Sinclair master and William Balmain surgeon. Captain Arthur Phillip was on HMS Sirius, and there were 9 other ships. 6 ships were transports, 3 were storeships, and Sirius and Supply were naval vessels. The ships assembled at Spithead on 17 March 1787 and they left on 13th May. (Thomas Headington had been on board since 6 Jan.) On 3rd June they reached Teneriffe, 4th Aug Rio, and 13th Oct. Table Bay, where they stayed a month. From here, Phillip went on ahead in the Supply, accompanied by the Alexander, Scarborough and Friendship, arriving in Botany Bay on 18th and 19th Jan. 1788. The other ships caught up, and arrived a day later. The voyage had taken 8 months and 1 week to complete. The voyage was fairly well documented. Surgeon General John White, although not on the Alexander himself, mentioned it many times. When the ships travelled together, a surgeon would move from one to another if he were needed and the weather was good. White first visited the Alexander at Spithead, as he had been told that many of the convicts 'had a malignant disease of a most dangerous kind'. He found 'several in bed with slight inflammatory complaints', and found that others stayed in bed as they did not have enough clothes, and the weather was cold. They had also been fed on salt provisions instead of fresh, and White said that when he promised to have these two matters fixed, he saw 'several of them put on such clothes as they had, and look a little cheerful.' However the Alexander probably had the worst health record - 16 men died before sailing, and 5 more before Teneriffe. Much of the new illness on the voyage was scurvy and dysentery, the scurvy being cured by the long stay at the Cape with fresh provisions. There was a plot between the prisoners and some of the seamen on the Alexander, which was given away by a convict informer. Some seamen had provided the convicts with an iron crowbar and other tools to enable them to break out and escape at the Cape. The ringleader was removed to the Sirius, where he was kept in irons, and some of the seamen exchanged for some from the Sirius. Also mentioned on the trip out were a seaman lost overboard, several good catches of fish in the tropics, and a long run of very windy cold weather after leaving Rio, so that the convicts were constantly wet and cold. BOTANY BAY TO PORT JACKSON. Within a couple of days of arriving in Botany Bay, a party took a ship's boat to look at Port Jackson, as the land round Botany Bay was sandy, poor and swampy, and fresh water was hard to find. Four days later the move began to Port Jackson, the two main points in favour being water, and also the fact that ships could get quite close to the shore in Farm Cove. Some convicts were immediately sent ashore to start clearing the ground, and another group was sent fishing. The cattle were landed, the hospital tents set up and quickly filled by scurvy and dysentery patients, and seeds were sown as soon as possible. Five of their precious sheep were killed by lightning at the beginning of February and from the beginning it was a constant battle to provide food for the settlement. No supply ships arrived for over 2 years. Then the Sirius was wrecked at Norfolk Island (March 1790), and Phillip was forced to send the Supply to Batavia for food. NORFOLK ISLAND. Thomas Headington was on the Sirius on the voyage when that disaster took place. Fortunately the convicts had been taken off the day before the ship sank. Norfolk Island had been settled almost immediately from Port Jackson, with Philip Gidley King as first commandant, as two things grew better there than in NSW - tall pine trees, which it was hoped could be used for ships' masts and spars, and flax, for making clothes and sails. Its greatest disadvantage was lack of a safe harbour, and sometimes ships had to stand off for days at a time. King arrived there in March 1788, with a party of 22 others, including 9 male and 6 female convicts. He found the soil fertile, but unfortunately the crops they planted were destroyed by weevils and grubs. Food was short well into the second year of the settlement, and more and more convicts were being sent from Port Jackson, as King had sent such good reports to Phillip of the progress being made. In March 1790 there were 150 people on the Island, after the wreck of the Sirius this figure jumped to 498, and in Nov. 1791 there were 1008. Starvation was only avoided just after the Sirius sank by the discovery of the petrels on Mt Pitt. Norfolk Island records of July 1791 show Thomas Eddington as supporting 3 on a Sydney Town one-acre lot, having cleared 52 rods and felled 26 rods of timber (a rod was 5.5 yds i.e 4 rods = 1 cricket pitch). He also had a half-share in a sow. In November 1791 he may have married Elizabeth Thompson. There is no record of the marriage, but about 100 couples were married that day, taking advantage of a visit by Rev. Richard Johnson. By July 1792 he was leasing Lot 59, of 12 acres, 11 of which were ploughable, and he had 5 under cultivation by Oct. 1793. In June 1794 Thomas Headington was living with Elizabeth Thompson and one child, he was listed in the 1796 muster, and died on 13 Jan. 1798 at the age of 40. His two children were Margaret, born in 1792, and John (c.1796). Dates and ages are a great problem with these early records. Working backwards, if Thomas Eddington were 40 when he died, he would have been born in 1758. His age was given as 18 on the Ceres in 1786, in which case he would have been born in 1768. Mollie Gillen, in her book The Founders of Australia, says he may have been the son of Richard and Elizabeth Heddington who was baptised at Bray on 30 Oct. 1763. I have personally seen his grave at Norfolk Island. It is the oldest grave in existence on the Island.
