Birth about 1803  Westmeath, Ireland. (Death Certificate has Ireland; Convict Indent and Certificate of Freedom have Westmeath) Marriage to Ann Seary (1805–) abt 1827  Ireland. (source: death cert) Age 30 — Arrival 26 June 1833 • Sydney Cove: on the convict ship 'Portland'. Convict indent: tried Roscommon 25 September 1832 for stealing money, 7 year sentence. RC, married with 3 children, from Co Westmeath, occupation 'butcher and cattle jobber', no former convictions. 5ft 6.75in, Ruddy complexion and much freckled, Nose small and thin, Red whiskers, Brown hair, Hazel and small eyes.  1837 muster: his master is Alex. Busby in the Cassilis district Ticket of Leave 16 Oct 1838: 1838/16791839 Migration of his wife Ann Seary 33 and three daughters Mary 12, Eleanor 9, Elizabeth 7 on the ship 'Margaret'. Matthew's name was on a list of convicts who have applied for their wives and families to be sent to NSW at the expense of the Govt: wife Ann Seary and 3 children, of Ashlone - parish of St Mary, Irishtown, she is known to Robert English Esqr, Irishtown and 2 others. 30 July 1840 Certificate of freedom 40/1176. This also gives his description (as before, only change is hair 'sandy brown'). Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser (NSW : 1843 - 1893), Saturday 18 March 1843, page 3: "FORGERY.—A man named Mathew Edwards, against whom there is a warrant out from the Cassilis bench on a charge of forgery, has been apprehended in Sydney, and is now on his way up to this place. The warrant was issued against him in December, 1841, and he was apprehended in September last, and committed to take his trial at the Maitland assizes; but on his way to Newcastle gaol he contrived to escape from the custody of the Cassilis police." Mathew Edwards (Portland 1833) was admitted to Darlinghurst Gaol (no date in record) 12 February 1843: Admitted Newcastle Gaol from Sydney 12 Feb 1843, occupation butcher. Purpose: 'Bench at Cassilis'; Disposed of: 'to Maitland' 14 Feb 1843. Death 21 January 1877 • Scone, New South Wales, Australia: at Scone Hospital, farmer, 75, cause of death pneumonia, born Ireland, 36 years in NSW, married Ireland age 25 to Ann Seary, issue 2 males 3 females living, 1 female deceased, informant John Edwards, son, Wingen. Burial 22 January 1877 • Murrurundi, New South Wales, Australia, witnesses Matthew Edwards, John Edwards (from Death Certificate)
