Hull, coroner, held an Inquest on the body of a man named John Eighteen, who died on Saturday in the General Hospital. The enquiry elicited the following facts : — On Wednesday last the deceased, who was employed by Mr H. M. Evans, was engaged in shifting timber near the barque Free Trader. In dragging a piece of timber off the heap his heel caught the edge of the deck, and he fell backward between the barque and the wharf, which is constructed of pile and stone. The vessel was about three feet from the side of the wharf. The deceased struck against the vessel's side, and fell into the water, head downwards. A man named Joseph Chance jumped down and took him out. Eighteen said that he was all right, but afterwards complained of a pain in his back. Mr Evans then sent for a cab, and the poor fellow was conveyed to the General Hospital , where he was attended to by Dr. Bright. The latter gentleman informed the jury that death resulted from a fracture of the upper dorsal vertebrae. The jury brought in a verdict of “Accidental Death”. INQUESTS - May 1875.
