Convict Notes
This Elijah Nobbs is presumably the person of the same name who selected two blocks of land along the Grange Burn near Hamilton in the late 1850s, the blocks being Allotment 40b, Section 26 and Allotment 40c Section 26 in the Parish of South Hamilton, totalling approximately 71 acres. The land was leased by Mr John Poynton sometime after 1857. His lease expired on 1st April 1862. The land was auctioned on 26th February 1862. Elijah Nobbs was an exile from Pentonville Prison and the "Maitland" was not only a passenger ship, but alternated as a prison Ship. The Maitland was destined to van Diemans land but was turned away from the port, as they did not want exiles as they were free on arrival and were paid men. Elijah ended up here in Victoria. Elijah was christened at Morton on the Hill Norfolk England, his crime was stealing a horse from Mr Diggins of Walsingham Nfk. and he was sentenced to Pentonville Prison England for 7 years. Elijah married Mary Ann Sydenham at Brisbane Hill (A property near Hamilton Vic) in 1851 , Mary Ann arrived with her parents and siblings on the "Cornwall" 1848. The parents were from Devon England and the children were all christened Bristol area near Somerset.
