Eliza Riley was 18 years old on arrival in VDL and was transported for ‘Stealing a pewter pot’. Elizabeth was illiterate, 4’10 ½” tall, fresh complexion, black hair, brown eyes, native place, Manchester.

There were two Eliza/Elizabeth Ryley convicts on the Rajah. How can you ascertain which one married Benjamin Hurst in 1845 ? I know it was stated on her death that she was from London but this sort of after death information can be very unreliable.

Eliza/Elizabeth was 18 when convicted,she left the Port of London,England on the Rajah on the 5 April 1841, arriving in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on 19 July 1841, she obtained her freedom on 20 October 1847. Elizabeth married Benjamin Hurst on 15 May 1845 at St George's Anglican Church, Battery Point, Hobart, Tasmania, they had six children. Elizabeth died at her residence Angel Inn, Argyle Street, Hobart, on 8 November 1859 of consumption.

Eliza died of consumption at the 'Angel Inn', Argyle St, Hobart, TAS, aged 39, as Eliza Hurst. She had married Benjamin Hurst on 15 May 1845 at St George's Anglican Church, Battery Point.
