He was tried for stealing money from Squire (Clark) at Chester Great Sessions Chestershire on 17 4 1797, sentenced to death commuted to 7years, held on a hulk & arrived in NSW on 14 8 1802 after a voyage of 7months on PERSEUS. He married firstly Mary (Moss) on 4 2 1805 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. From Wikia Familypedia: Matthew Elkin - convict on the Perseus in 1802 Matthew Andrew Elkin arrived in Sydney, New South Wales in 4 Aug 1802 on the Perseus as a convict. Matthew Andrew Elkins had been charged with stealing 1s 12d from Squire Clark. He was tried at Chester on 17 April 1797 and sentenced to death which was later commuted to 7 years transportation. Placed aboard the Perseus the ship sailed from Spithead, England on 12 February 1802 for a voyage that lasted nearly 6 months. In 1805 he married a fellow convict Mary Moss, his first wife, who had arrived on the "Experiment" in 1804. Mary died in 1807. They had one daughter, Ann. In 1818, Matthew married his second wife Catherine Wilbow. In 1806 muster he is listed as being Free By Servitude, a shoemaker at Parramatta. In 1816 he is on the list of persons claiming they had served their "time" but had no supporting documents to prove it. Some time around 1816 he was working as a shoemaker at Lower Portland Head. Matthew died the day after giving away 2 of his daughter's in marriage at St. Thomas Church, Sackville. They were Jane, who married Joseph Blundell and Catherine who married William Jones. The inscription on Matthew's head stone at Windsor cemetery reads: MATTHEW ANDREW ELKINS 5 February 1834 Aged 53 years. "Far from the land where first he drew breath He bowed obedient to all conquering death. At Church he was and made his daughters brides On the next day it was the will of God he died."
