By intelligence lately received from Port Macquarie, we learn that about the 25th of March last, a dreadful murder was committed in the gaol yard of that settlement, on the person of William Elliott, by a ruffian named Patrick Maloney, a desperate and abandoned bushranger, who had escaped from confinement on charge of murder and robbery, and had been wandering about for several weeks in the exercise of his predatory habits, until at length he was apprehended and lodged in gaol, and the morning after availed himself of an opportunity to take up an axe, and with a blow fractured the skull of his unfortunate victim, who happened to be nearest to him, on the spot. The poor man, who, it seems was an inoffensive character, died the next day; and when the murderer was questioned as to his motive, he disclaimed any animosity against the deceased, but said he was tired of life, and sought that as the readiest means to have an end put to it, that it was a matter of indifference to him who was his victim.
