Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

n.b. There are two Thomas Evans on this voyage of the Surrey 1829. This Thomas is noted by 'Identifier 2', convicted at Monmouth. Thomas Evans convicted for stealing two watches from a shop. 14 yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Surrey' 1829. Single man; aged 24yrs; farm labourer& foundry man; 5'7 1/2". Native place of birth: Carmarthen, Wales. It is noted, March 1830 that whilst a Constable of Police, at New Norfolk, he was drunk whilst on duty. Several other notes of misconduct and punishments. Pardon granted Free Certificate no. 549 1843
