The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Medical Journal of Ocean for 21 June 1817 to 16 Jan 1818, by George Fairfowl. ADM 101/57/8/11817-1817 Folio 6: Francis Ever, Convict, aged 20; disease or hurt, severe headache, vertigo, prostration of strength, anorexia and sickness of stomach. Taken ill, 19 September 1817. Dismissed cured 10 October 1817.

Absconded. Francis Ewer, plumber, per Ocean 3, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair ruddy complexion, pock-pitted, dark sandy hair, grey eyes. Sydney Gazette, 31 July 1819.

Francis Ewer was 19 years old when indicted at the Old Bailey. He received a death sentence but was reprieved and sent to Sydney for life. The son of Thomas and Jane Ewer, St. Sepulchre, London. 13/5/1820: Convict. Re deposition and statement of re case of American ship "General Gates" carrying off prisoners from New South Wales contrary to port regulations; deposition made on board "Dromedary" at New Zealand on 14 Apr. 13/1/1821: Received 25 lashes and transported for purloining a quantity of lead. 27/1/1821: On list of prisoners transported to Newcastle per "Lady Nelson". 27/2/1822: To be removed to Port Macquarie having given himself up under the proclamation of Sir Thomas Brisbane. 27/2/1822: On lists of convict runaways removed to Port Macquarie per "Newcastle". 10/12/1822: Prisoner at Port Macquarie to be forwarded to Sydney to give evidence at the Criminal Court. 17,19/12/1822: Summoned from Port Macquarie per "lady Nelson" to appear as a witness in a mujrder trial. 23/4/1823,9/5/1823: Re his confinement at the Convict Barracks. 21/8/1823: Absconded from Byron's gang. Described as: 5'8" tall, grey eyes, dark sandy hair, fair ruddy complexion. 7/7/1825: Absconded from Plumber's Gang. The 1825 General Muster shows Francis is again at Port Macquarie. No subsequent records of Francis have been found.
