Oliver Cromwell Ewings (Convict) B:1 Jan 1784 Brook St, Holborn, Middlesex, London, England, United Kingdom D:5 Aug 1858 Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia Birth 1 Jan 1784 • Brook St, Holborn, Middlesex, London, England, United Kingdom birth date taken from baptism but convict records state 1st Jan 1784 and Baptised 6 June 1784, Waltham St Lawrence, Berkshire son of Oliver Ewings and Elizabeth Viney Baptism 17 Jul 1785 • St James, Westminster, London, England Oliver son of Oliver and Elizabeth born 3rd June 1785 Marriage 18 August 1804 • St James, Piccadilly, Westminster, London, England Marriage (with Oliver Cromwell EWINGS) - Piccadilly St James (Westminster), Middlesex, England (both of that parish). Witnesses included Richard Gorway, Ronda Graveley and Phoebe Stubbs. Trial 20 Apr 1829 • London, Middlesex, England £40 belonging to his employer, Robert Espinasse of Inner Temple, [London]. A respectable-looking man, about forty years of age, late clerk to Robert Espinasse, Esq. was charged at Worship-street office, with embezzling several large sums of money received by him for and on account of his employer. apeal for clemency 25 April 1829 • old bailey, London, England "The prisoner only took the money in order to secure the payment of various sums that he had borrowed to liquidate the claims of his workmen; has been employed by most respectable men in the legal profession for 28 years; several gentlemen are keen to employ him". Arrival of family 1 Dec 1834 • Australia His wife Jane, age 52 and two daughters, Margaret age 17 and Emily arrived in the colony as a free settlers on December 1 1834 on board the ‘George Hibbert’, five years after Oliver had arrived. The ‘George Hibbert’ was a bark of 328 tons. Ticket of Leave 1836 • NSW, Australia He was granted his Ticket of Leave in 1836, seven years after arriving in the colony. The following year when the General Return of Convicts in NSW was taken he was living at Parramatta. Oliver had 5 daughters and 1 son who died as a baby,2 of hist daughters died in 1829 before he was tried for embezzlement . Jane joined him in 1834 along with 2 of his surviving daughters Margaret and Emily ,,the 3rd daughter jane remained in England and married George Thompson they were my great great great grandparents. His daughter margaret married another convict in Australia.

Source: Spectator Archive [database on-line] Citation details: 4 Apr 1829 p. 5 Text: EMBEZZLENENT.—On Saturday, Oliver Ewings, a respectable-looking man, about forty years of age, late clerk to Robert Espinasse, Esq. was charged at Worship-street office, with embezzling several large sums of money received by him for and on account of his employer. In November 1827, he had embezzled thirty guineas ; yet his employer not only forgave him this offence, but paid a debt of 20/. for which he had been arrested. He had subsequently embezzled several considerable sums. The prisoner's family was described by the officer who apprehended hint to be in the most miserable condition. _______________________ Oliver Ewings was listed as 45 years old on arrival. Native Place: Berkshire. Son of Oliver Ewings and Elizabeth (Viney) Ewings. 18/8/1804: Married Jane Stubbs at Westminster, Knightsbridge, London. Children: Jane Maxwell Ewings, Matilda Ewings, Elizabeth Eliza (Ewings) Callar, Margaret (Ewings) Solomon Ewings Emily Maria (Ewings) Parker Oliver was literate, married with 4 children, 5'4" tall, dark ruddy complexion, dark brown hair, dark hazel eyes, bluish marks on lower part of both eyes, small scar at corner of right eye. 8/3/1836: TOL 17/7/1843: COF 7/8/1858: Oliver Ewings died at Parramatta, NSW.
