In 1801 Robert was working working as a dock labourer when he was accused of stealing 5 iron bolts on 2nd February 1801. Ship:- the 'Canada' sailed with 104 male convicts on board of which 3 died during the voyage, his wife Ann was a passenger on board. Arrived on 14th December 1801. Hampshire Telegraph Monday 19th January 1801 p. 5 At the General Quarter Sessions, held at the Guildhall of this Borough, on Thursday last, before the Right Worshipful Sir John Carter, Mayor; James Burroagh, Esq., Recorder; William Goldson, Esq. the Rev. George Cuthbert, Stephen Gaselee, Esq. and Thomas White, Gent. the following persons were tried agreeably to their respective charges, viz.-... Robert Farlow, for stealing five iron bolts...transported for seven years. Robert had married Ann Dyer on 21st January 1799 at Portsea, Hampshire, their first child, Maria was born there in 1800, Ann and Maria arrived on the same vessel as Robert. By 1805 Robert had his Ticket of Leave and rented 10 acres. They are recorded as owning 10 hogs, 2 bushels of wheat and 8 bushels of maize in store. The 1822 Muster shows he held a land grant of 45 acres, all cleared, growing 30 acres of wheat and 15 acres of maize. His livestock had grown to 140 hogs and 4 horses, with 20 bushels of wheat and 300 bushels of maize in store. Robert received his Certificate of Freedom on 2nd February, 1811 three years after his sentence had expired. The administrative turmoil caused by the Rum Rebellion was possibly a factor or perhaps his support for Bligh was the real reason in this delay. In the 1828 Census he is recorded as having 221 acres of land of which 91 acres was cleared and cultivated, 19 horses and 20 cattle. Robert and Ann had 9 children Maria 1800, Harriet F. 1805, Ann 1807, William 1809, Christian 1811, Mary A. 1813, Elizabeth 1815, Robert 1817, and James 1820. In every respect Robert appears to be a gentleman of exemplary character. The archives contain numerous references to him. His applications for land grants, the assignment of government servants, subscriptions to the Hawkesbury Benevolent Society, etc.. In addition he was a signatory to an address to Samuel Marsden by Hawkesbury settlers in 1807 and an address to Governor Bligh from the principal inhabitants of N.S.W. in 1808. The Sydney Morning Herald carried the following notice:- "Robert Farlow died 22-5-1853 aged 75 years. An old and respected colonist." Ann died 1 month later on 13th June 1853 also age 75. Maitland Mercury Saturday 25th June 1853 p. 3 Deaths.
