Monday July 21. Magnus Bakie, and Catherine Ferrier, alias Stewart, wife of Robert Stewart, lately keeper of the Russian tap-room, Canongate, were accused of theft and reset of theft. Bakie was charged with six different acts of housebreaking and theft, to four of which he pleaded guilty; and was sentenced to 14 years transportation. The woman pleaded not guilty, and the diet against her was deserted, pro loco et tempore, and she was committed on a new warrant. The Scots Magazine, 1 July 1817. Scotch law. Reset of Theft. The receiving and keeping of stolen goods knowing them to be stolen, with a design of feloniously retaining them from the real owner.
