Philip FARRINGTON was convicted at Warwick, England on 24 March 1832 for horse stealing - one gelding. 14 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Enchantress' arriving 31 July 1833. Single man. VDL: Assigned to work services. 1833: assigned to Melville 1834: assigned to Melville - steal 8 reams of paper. Committed for trial. Not Guilty. 1835: at Westbury 1836: at Launceston Ticket of Leave granted 31 July 1839: Application for permission to marry - Philip Farrington per the Enchantress to Eliza Dancer, free. Approved. (ref. 52/1/1 pg 57) Note: as Eliza was a widow there is an index to a marriage between Eliza Knight to a John Dancer in 1835, so this may be her actual name and arrived as a convict per the ship 'William Bryan') 14 Sept 1839: Marriage - Philip Farrington, aged 32 yrs, Compositor, bachelor to Eliza Dancer, aged 31 yrs, widow at Trinity Church of England, Hobart. (ref. 37/1/1 no. 57) 24 May 1844: Conditional Pardon approved. 8 May 1866: Death of wife Eliza, aged 66 yrs, at her residence - 13 Patrick St. Hobart. Wife of Philip Farrington. (ref. Mercury newspaper, Hobart 10 May 1866) 24 Sept 1868: Found drowned, aged 65 yrs. Inquest held. Free by servitude; ship to Colony - Enchantress. (ref. POL709/1/5) Identified as Philip Farrington previously worked as a Compositor for the Government Printing Office. Funeral to leave his residence in Argyle St., Hobart.
