John Farthy was 27 years old on arrival. Transported for Desertion and taking clothes. John was listed as a Labourer, single, 5'9" tall, dark brown hair, light blue eyes, full face, fresh complexion, very stout, D on left side - John was semiliterate and had been a soldier when he deserted. General Courts Martial Kingston CW (Canada West) [WO90-3]. Trial: 30 Jun 1857. Desertion. Losing necessaries (making away with certain articles of his Regimental clothing etc.) [PCom2-40-5902]. Sentenced: Four years penal servitude. Branded D.
