John Farthy was 27 years old on arrival. Transported for Desertion and taking clothes. John was listed as a Labourer, single, 5'9" tall, dark brown hair, light blue eyes, full face, fresh complexion, very stout, D on left side - John was semiliterate and had been a soldier when he deserted. General Courts Martial Kingston CW (Canada West) [WO90-3]. Trial: 30 Jun 1857. Desertion. Losing necessaries (making away with certain articles of his Regimental clothing etc.) [PCom2-40-5902]. Sentenced: Four years penal servitude. Branded D. Prison and Register # 30 Jun 1857 Kingston Penitentiary, 4 months. 18 Oct to 5 Nov 1857 on board ship Valean (?) to England, 18 days. 5 Nov 1857 to 19 Oct 1858 Millbank Prison #5902, 11 months 14 days. 19 Oct 1858 to 20 May 1859 Portland Prison #8462, 7 months. 20 May 1859 to 19 Aug 1859 Convict Ship Sultana, 82 days passage from Plymouth. 19 Aug 1859 Fremantle Prison #5450. 15/2/1860: TOL 8/3/1862: Left Western Australia per Strathallen to Adelaide, SA. 9/6/1880: Married Sarah Summers (widow of George Evens) at North Adelaide, SA. 5/9/1885: Married Ann Louisa Newton (widow of Mr. Maronsen) at St. Augustine church, Port Augusta, SA.
