National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/14/13 1831 Sept 1 collective petition (7 people including fellow shop owners and businessmen of Leith) on behalf of Duncan Ferguson, convicted at Glasgow Circuit Court for uttering forged notes. There is a letter from Mr McQueen in favour of the prisoner. Gaoler's report states that prisoner's character is bad, previously in prison and feigned insanity before trial. Grounds for clemency: 6 months in prison already, from a good farming family and has a large family to support. Initial sentence: transportation for life. Annotated: 'Nil'. AX 4. [Scot].
