Convict Notes

On arrival in VDL in 1832, Henry FEWENS was listed as a blacksmith's labourer, aged 16. His Conduct Record details a grim life of punishments for various misdemeanours. Some of these include a sentence of 2 years' hard labour in chains for "absconding and violently assaulting Robert Briggs". It was recommended that he be sent to Port Arthur. He arrived in Port Arthur in 1840/41 where more misdemeanours resulted in punishments including solitary confinement, hard labour in chains and whipping. In 1845, his existing sentence of hard labour in chains was extended by 6 months for absconding from the Ross Chain Gang. In June that year, he received three days' solitary confinement for "disorderly conduct". There are no further entries in his Conduct Record after this date (see stors.tas.gov.au).
