Convict Notes

The proceedings of the Old Bailey is not a full record. The character witnesses are often omitted. House-breaking was a very serious crime often carrying a death sentence. At the end of this case both the accused were sentenced to death but there was a jury recommendation for mercy for James Field on account of character. There was also a petition from his former master, customers and inhabitantsof Camberwell. It also gives family details- used to be a fruiterer, then a driver of a cab but out of work with wife and three small children. The death sentence was respited to transportation for life (along with several others from the same Old Bailey session).
