James Finan married Mary Cahill, daughter of convict Martin Cahill 18 June 1860 in Launceston, Tasmania. They went on to have 10 children. Birth records spell the Finan name in different ways, Fynan; Tinan; Finnin; Fining. James and Mary lived at Turners Marsh and are both buried at the Karoola Catholic Cemetery.
