John was born in Dublin, Ireland. He enlisted in the 28th Regiment of Foot at the age of 18 years 25/9/1806. His army records state "that in consequence of a reduction in the establishment of the Regiment and being slightly wounded in the right arm by a ball shot at Quatre Bras 16th June 1815 was discharged on 29th July 1819 as Sergeant". He had previously served in the Peninsular Wars. He received medals for both the Peninsular Wars & Waterloo. He had served for 15 years and 33 days in Ireland, Gibraltar, England, Portugal, Spain, France, Malta & Corfu. He became a Clerk in the Engineers Dept, then Convict Dept in Hobart, where he became Chief Clerk. He married in 1834 & had a son & a daughter prior to taking up a position as Clerk to the Henty Bros in Portland Victoria. References; Public Records Office, London.
