The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Assize Intelligence. YORK. The following are the prisoners who have been capitally convicted, and who have received sentence of death :— and J. Firby, for stealing in a dwelling house to the amount of forty shillings, The two first in this sad enumeration were executed on Monday the 17th inst.— ... the rest are reprieved. Manchester Mercury, 1 April 1817. The following male convicts left the Castle, on Monday morning, to be delivered on board the Retribution Hulk at Sheerness, up the river Medway, viz.— … and John Firby, to be severally transported for life. York Herald, 17 May 1817.

1828 Census Index. John Furby, Ocean, Melville island. -------------------------------------------------- Criminal Court, Friday. John Furby was indicted for assaulting James Wilkins on the 28th of January, at Melville Island, through which deceased Wilkins came by his death. Prisoner and deceased had a quarrel -— they came to blows— but it was clearly proved that deceased struck first. Dr. Sherwin proved the deceased came by his death through a contusion of the head. No intention of malice appeared on the part of the prisoner. He was acquitted, his ticket of leave being cancelled.
