James FLEET was convicted at Denbigh, Wales on 4 April 1837 for stealing a pair of brass candlesticks. Gaol Report: Convicted before & dishonest. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Neptune" arriving there 19 Jan 1838. Widower, 1 child. (ref. Conduct Record) VDL: Assigned to work services. 5 April 1841: Assigned to Mr. Bisdey/Bisdee (large estate owner) Reprimanded for talking to a person, under sentence, during Divine Service. 18 Jan 1842: Ticket of Leave granted. (ref: Conduct Record & Gov Gazette) 1844: Free Certificate issued, no. 605. (N.B. There was another James Fleet, convict in VDL and it is he who died, at Esperance, in 1845.)
