The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

JAMES FLEMMING, Theft > pocketpicking, 4th December 1816. 125. JAMES FLEMMING , was indicted for stealing, on the 2nd of November , 1s. 6d. in monies numbered, the property of Thomas Gearing , from his person . JOHN THOMAS GEARING. I am a constable of St. Giles's . On the 2nd of November, between twelve and one o'clock in the morning, I was in Dyot-street ; there was a great crowd, and I went to see what was the matter; the prisoner put his hand into my pocket, he drew my money out, and threw it away; I took him, and gave him in charge. SAMUEL FURZEMAN . The prisoner was given into my charge at the watch-house. Prisoner's Defence. I was looking at the crowd, and he took me. GUILTY . Aged 15. Transported for Seven Years . Second Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Common Sergeant. -------------------------------------------------- Jan 1818, by George Fairfowl.
