IN VDL: 26 May, 1853: On arrival in VDL, Thomas Fleming was listed as convict #27909, an imperfect gardener, 20 years old, 5’2½” tall with black hair, blue eyes and a sallow complexion. He was single, Roman Catholic, and semi-illiterate. Native place: Leeds. Of his offence, he said he had been transported for picking pockets, and 17 shillings was taken. He had four previous convictions for picking pockets and one for vagrancy.
