THERE IS A PORTRAIT IN THE TASMANIAN ARCHIVES OF A CONVICT THOMAS FLEMING AT PORT ARTHUR PHOTOGRAPHER UNKNOWN BUT POSSIBLY TAKEN BY A. H. BOYD OR T.J. Thomas Fleming per St Vincent was tried at the Supreme Court on 9 Sept 1867 for housebreaking and larceny, sentenced to seven years. He was born in Yorkshire , aged 38 yrs, 5 ft 6ins, black hair, Free in Servitude. Two moles on left cheek. He was discharged from the Hobart Gaol on 7 January 1874, and photographed on discharge by police photographer Thomas J. Nevin. There was no photographer by the name of A. H. Boyd in Tasmania: he was briefly a Commandant at the Port Arthur prison. He had nothing to do with these police mugshots.
my name is gay fleming I was born in 1939 and I am claude Flemings daughter who was born in1907 and died in 1962. He lived at the Shot Tower,TAROONA and later at BATTERY POINT.
Unfortunately, the Thomas Fleming photo at Port Arthur is not our Thomas. The photo was taken in 1874, after our Thomas had died.
Some of the comments are incorrect. The only ones I accept as correct were Anonymous on 15th June, 2011 and Andrew Bonnitcha on 7th June, 2016. The two with bad comparisons are Anonymous on 8th June, 2011 who said that Thomas Fleming was born circa 1796, when he was born in 1801, and Sid Fisher on 13th November, 2014 who said that Thomas had been charged in 1867, which was after Thomas' release many years earlier.
Thomas' mother had died in 1810 when he was 9 years old, and his father died in 1815 when he was only 14 years old. Possibly, with no parents any more, the watch he had stolen might have been either to get money for food or might have been to do with his grief. Getting a 7 years jail sentence was far too much, but for Thomas to get to Australia meant he could start a new future with a wife, children, and becoming a publican.
Anonymous's comment "HE MARRIED ANNE JANE GRIGGS GRANDAUGHTER OF SARAH GRIGGS 2 FLEET CONVICT WHO ARRIVED ON THE SHIP ‘NEPTUNE ‘THE SHIP FROM HELL",is not quite correct. Ann Jane Griggs was the grand daughter of the convict Sarah Griggs of the ship Neptune, not daughter. Convict Sarah Griggs had a daughter named Sarah Griggs with Captain John Townson. Anne Jane Griggs Collins was born of Sarah Griggs Jr and Nathanial Collins.
