The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Hulk Record HO-9-7_1 page 28. Sheerness Hulk. Retribution, and Bellerophon. Received from York 12 May 1817. George Cummins Flintoft, age 21, Capitally respited, Tried York 8 March 1817, Life, Transported 28 July 1817.
Assize Intelligence. YORK. The following are the prisoners who have been capitally convicted, and who have received sentence of death :— Geo. C. Flintoft, … for burglary, … The two first in this sad enumeration were executed on Monday the 17th inst.— ... the rest are reprieved.  Manchester Mercury, 1 April 1817.  The following male convicts left the Castle, on Monday morning, to be delivered on board the Retribution Hulk at Sheerness, up the river Medway, viz.— George Cummins Flintoft, … to be severally transported for life. York Herald, 17 May 1817.
"IN THE CITY GAOL ... GC Flintoff, Charles Meyser and W Ellis for stealing shoes, the property of Wm Sanderson of this city. Edward Flintoft for having, along with the above C Meyser and Wm Ellis, broken into the dwelling house of Mrs Shadwell and stolen a gold watch and a loin of mutton, her property." At the late Assizes he was admitted King's Evidence against Geo Cummings Flintoft and Charles Moyser, who were capitally convicted of burglary, and at the same Assizes was also admitted King's Evidence against Edward Flintoft in the City Gaol, who was sentenced to be transported 14 years for receiving stolen goods."
