John Flynn was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 16th Mar 1842 and arriving 11th Aug 1842 with 254 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

John Flynn was convicted at Cape Town Court Martial on 25/01/1842 for desertion. 7yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the Surrey, arriving 11/08/1842. Single man; Roman Catholic; native place of birth: Sligo, Ireland; Soldier/Groom; 5'5 1/4"; aged 20yrs; fresh complexion, freckled; red curly hair; lt blue eyes; not literate. 2yrs Probation at Wedge Bay Certificate of Freedom 26/01/1849. Possibly this person: LAUNCESTON-(From Our Reporter.) OLD MAN'S SUDDEN DEATH. January 5. 1908. John Flynn, 80, living off and on at the Invalid Depot, who sold soaps and perfumes, took ill in Patterson street yesterday, and was taken into the National Hotel, where he died.
