Hugh son of a district surgeon was born in Calcutta India. He was educated in Scotland and practiced as a lawyer in London England from 1836-1843. He married Julia Eliza Butcher. After he was pardoned and he worked as a school master and became a respected member of the Launceston Tasmania community.
