24/12/1859 Leeds Times West Yorkshire, England: At Gloucester, James Frebery, a wretched-looking fellow, with his neck bandaged, having attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat, was charged with a murderous assault on Emma Mabbet, at Almondsbury, on the 29th October. Prosecutrix deposed that she lived with her mother-in-law, and that the prisoner had lived with them. On the evening in question, her mother-in-law having gone to Bristol, the prisoner forced the house door open, seized the prosecutrix by the left arm, pulled off his boots, and forced her up-stairs. On reaching her bed-room, he said, "Turn round, there's a flea on you neck." She then saw that he had a razor in his hand, and she fell or was pushed upon the floor, when she felt a razor go through her left ear, and also received a cut on her forehead. A struggle followed, and she lost her senses but on coming to herself she found her throat and hands badly cut, and had to be removed to the Bristol Infirmary. Prosecutrix had been on intimate terms with the prisoner. A statement made by the accused before the magistrates having been read, to the effect that he did not know what he was doing when he committed the offence, the jury found him Guilty, and Sentence of Death was recorded against him. James Frebery was listed as being 29 years old on arrival in WA. He was single, 5'7" tall, brown hair and eyes, long face, dark complexion, stout, illiterate. 22/4/1864: TOL 8/5/1872: CP Comments: Labourer, farm servant, smith. To Shanghai, 28/4/1873.
