1841 Census should read Southwark. 1852-1854 Several convictions; spent some months in penal hulks 'President', 'Success' and 'Sacramento. Discharge to Ticket of Leave 21/12/1854 Side note mentions wife residing in Little Bourke Street at the Scottish Hotel. Wife's maiden name Annie O'Brien. Religion RC; imperfect reading and writing.

Amos French was convicted at the CCC, London 4 April 1843 for Larceny - stealing a pr of candlesticks. 7yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Barossa', arriving 1844. Ship surgeon's report: "bad". Flogged on board. Aged 15yrs; single; 4'4 1/4"; Protestant; can read & write; shoemaker. Native place: Clerkenwell, London Father: Alexander Mother: Rebecca Brothers: Thomas, Robert, George, Stephen & James 1 yr's Probation period - at Point Puer (penal settlement for young offenders) 21 Aug 1849: Ticket of Leave granted. 9 April 1850: Free Certificate Departed Van Diemen's Land for Melbourne, Victoria: 10 June 1851 Ship: "Mariposa" Steerage passenger From Launceston Ship to Colony: "Barossa" Ref: POL220/1/1
