Charles Friend was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 31st Dec 1813 and arriving 28th Jul 1814 with 204 passengers.

Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Per "Surrey", 1814 1817 Jun 10 On list of prisoners to be sent to Newcastle per "Lady Nelson" (Reel 6005; 4/3496 p.177) 1824 Jul 1 Servant of Samuel Leverton of Sydney; attestation as to his character for a ticket of leave (Reel 6027; 4/1716.1 pp.245-7) List of Prisoners to be sent to Newcastle by the Lady Nelson, June 19th, 1817. 2nd Surry, Charles Friends, Convict, Convicted by Crim Court, 12 May 1817, 3 years. The following is a LIST of CRIMINALS who were convicted and sentenced at the late Criminal Court Sessions. Charles Friend, for stealing a watch, chain, and seals, three years to Newcastle. Sydney Gazette, 17 May 1817.

James Chrisford and Charles Friend, charged with uttering divers forged and counterfeited Bank of England notes, with intent to defraud Caroline Barham, Samuel Barham, and others. Kentish Weekly Post 3 Aug 1813. James Chrisford and Charles Friend were’ indicted for uttering forged notes, one 4. and one 51. to which charge they pleaded guilty. Kentish Gazette, 20 Aug 1813. On Saturday morning the following were conducted from Maidstone gaol, under a proper escort, to on board the Zealand Hulk, at Sheerness, viz.-—-James Gilchrist, Henry Still, John Scarr, and Charles White, to be transported for life. —James Chrisford and Charles Friend, for fourteen years.—  Kentish Gazette, 7 Sep 1813.
