Convict Notes




The Annotated Convict Printed Indentures state that Mary Ann Fulton alias Mary Ann Murray was aged 32 years old; could read and write; Religion Protestant; Status Widow and no children. She was a native of Edinburgh and occupation Kitchen maid. She was convicted at Durham Quarter Sessions for stealing wearing apparel on 2 April 1838 for 7 months She had one prior conviction and had served 4 months. Physical attributes Height 5 feet 0 1/2 inches; Complexion ruddy and slightly pock pitted; hair sandy and blue to grey. Prisoner number 39-236 and transport number 70. The Australian Transport Register 1837-1838 indicated that although Mary Ann was convicted on 2 April 1838 that her sentence was comported to the 4 April as beginning of imprisonment 2 days... Ticket of Leave granted on 29 July 1844 Number 44/704. Allowed to remain in the district of Windsor. Another comment on the certificate stated that per the Government Minute on a list from the Female Factory cancelled. The Sydney Morning Herald dated Saturday 7 September 1844 stated that the following Tickets of Leave were cancelled for Mary Ann Fulton alias Mary Ann Murray, per Planter, being of unsound mind and incapable of taking care of herself, Windsor Bench.




Married Henry Cooper 23 October 1841 at Jerrabomberra, near Queanbeyan on 23 October 1841 by Rev. Edward Smith. Queanbeyan Church of England Parish records and Convict Register for Application to Marry approved 1841. Henry Cooper transported on Roslyn Castle. Age at marriage 34.
