Mary Furlong was transported on the Margaret, departing 30th Apr 1840 and arriving 18th Aug 1840 with 78 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Medical Journal of the Margaret 1840: Folio 2: Thomas Farlong, aged 2; disease or hurt, bronchitis. Put on sick list, 28 April 1840. Discharged 8 May 1840. Folio 2: Thomas Farlong, aged 2; disease or hurt, ophthalmia. Put on sick list, 9 June 1840. Folio 3: Mary Farlong, aged 26; disease or hurt, obstipatio. Put on sick list, 18 July 1840. Discharged 13 August 1840 Mary’s husband Richard Furlong arrived per ‘Nautilus 1840 – landed at Norfolk Island and arrived VDL 3/3/1844 and died there after being stabbed on 19/2/1861.




Mary Furlong was convicted at Co. Wexford, Ireland for receiving stolen property, 1839. 7 yr transportation sentence. Transported to New South Wales, Australia on the "Margaret" arriving 1840. Aged 15yrs; married woman; 1 child - Jane Furlong accompanied her; general house servant. Husband also transported the same year - listed as Richard Furlong.
