Old Bailey: WILLIAM GADSBY, Theft > simple larceny, 17th October 1833. Reference Number: t18331017-49 Offence: Theft > simple larceny Verdict: Guilty Punishment: Transportation WILLIAM GADSBY was indicted for stealing on the 24th of September , 4 shillings, 4 sixpences, and 1 1/2d. the monies of William Gadsby . WILLIAM GADSBY . I am a hackney-coachman - the prisoner is my only child ; he is between eleven and twelve years old - on the 24th of September I called him up, at seven o'clock in the morning, to light the fire and get breakfast; this money was in my coat pocket; he slept in the same room with me; I fell asleep again, and at half-past seven o'clock I awoke, and missed my money; the prisoner was then gone, and I did not see him for a fortnight, when I met him in the street, and asked how he came to rob me; he said, he did not know - he has robbed me six or seven different times - I have tried every means of reclaiming him. ELIZABETH GADSBY . I am the wife of the prosecutor; the prisoner is my son - I got up that morning at half-past six o'clock - I felt the money then safe in my husband's pocket. GUILTY . Aged 12. - Transported for Seven Years. William Gadsby was listed as being 17 years old on arrival, he was 4’6 ¾” tall, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes, native place: Turnstile, Holborn. 14/5/1840: TOL 26/6/1840: TOL suspended. 1840: Free Certificate. Not sure about the date of death listed – there were a few William Gadsby’s around at the same time – 17/1/1852: William Gadsby – English gold seeker aged 27, steerage passenger per ‘Thalia’ Hobart to Williamstown. The death is recorded of Frances Anne Gadsby 1857 #628 aged 35, in Victoria, daughter of Richard Elcom of London. William Gadsby wed Jul-Sep 1849 to Sophia Giddings in UK William Gadsby 1823 - 1869 #3373 aged 46 son of Elizabeth and William Gadsby of London, came when aged 38, in Dec 1858 on the Shooting Star with Hannah aged 30, as Unassisted Inward passengers. ***From the trial record the parents are the same but the age is all wrong – needs more research I think, but nothing found on Linc.tas., after his CP*** William Gatsby and Sophia Giddens who died 1903 at Nyngan, NSW, lived at Creswick, Dowling Ford, Learmonth
